This month in Film Club: A legendary slow cinema director takes a colorful turn into the fast-paced frenzy of the musical romance, and a mother-daughter pair of ex-socialites spend their secluded days in a crumbling New York mansion in a cult classic documentary.

Today from 18:00-21.00 hrs, the UvA Film Club will host their first screening of the academic year 2025-2026 in HVL/BuzzHouse’s Co-Working Space! This week's film is Golden Eighties (1986, dir. Chantal Akerman), with an introduction by Parker Burrows.

Romance simmers and erupts among the artificial colors of a bustling shopping mall in legendary Belgian director Chantal Akerman’s Golden Eighties. Best known for the slow-paced style and brutal realism of her 1970s films (such as Je Tu Il Elle and Jeanne Dielman), Akerman takes an ambitious departure from her aesthetic signatures via the technicolor musical. Golden Eighties stylishly bursts with 80s-pop numbers and campy melodrama, without fully concealing a darkness underneath. Akerman’s subtle reflections on historical trauma and consumer capitalism complicates her whimsical form, especially when channeled through legendary actress Delphine Seyrig’s shattered performance. Come for the chirpy hair-salon gossip and ill-advised love triangles, stay for the sharp critiques on heterosexual marriage and the tragic commodification of romance!
